- You are asked for your bank details, OTPs, passwords or copies of documents before any genuine hiring step.
Common scams to watch for
- Pay-for-job schemes — a “guaranteed” job in exchange for a fee. No legitimate employer charges you to be hired.
- Fake offer letters — official-looking letters using a real company’s name to demand a deposit.
- Work-from-home data entry traps — upfront “kit” or registration payments for jobs that never materialise.
- Courier or tax fees — requests to pay to “release” a laptop, cheque or offer package.
How to verify a job offer
- Check the company’s official website and contact details independently.
- Confirm the recruiter’s email uses the company’s official domain.
- Search the company name along with words like “scam” or “review.”
- Never pay money or share sensitive credentials to secure a job.
What to do if you are targeted
Stop all contact and do not pay. If you have shared bank details or made a payment, contact your bank immediately and report the incident to the national cybercrime portal at cybercrime.gov.in. Warning others by reporting the listing also helps protect fellow job seekers.
